Breaking: Dutch Central Bank Relocates 86 Tonnes of Gold to London

Must read

In a strategic move highlighting the importance of crisis preparedness amid geopolitical tensions, the Dutch central bank has relocated approximately 86 tonnes of gold from its storage sites in the United States and Canada to London. This transfer, which took place between March and August 2026, is part of an effort to enhance the tradability and accessibility of the Netherlands’ gold reserves through London’s prominent international gold market.

As a result of this significant shift, the distribution of the Netherlands’ gold holdings has changed notably. The share of gold reserves in London has increased to 32.1%, while the portion stored in New York has decreased to 18.5%. Similarly, Ottawa now also accounts for 18.5% of the reserves. Meanwhile, the remaining 30.8% of the nation’s gold is securely kept at the central bank’s own facility located in Zeist, Netherlands.

The Dutch central bank’s decision to reallocate its gold holdings is driven by a desire to reduce risks associated with concentrating reserves in specific locations. By diversifying the geographical distribution of its gold, the Netherlands aims to mitigate potential vulnerabilities and ensure that its assets are more evenly spread across different regions.

The Netherlands, which holds a total of 612.4 tonnes of gold valued at approximately €72.2 billion as of the end of 2025, has not altered the overall quantity of its reserves with this transfer. The central bank’s action underscores a proactive approach to managing the country’s financial security and readiness in the face of possible global crises.
