The impact of higher energy prices linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran has been relatively muted for Dutch households, with average energy bills remaining stable at approximately €160 per month in the first half of the year. Despite a rise in gas prices, electricity costs have not seen significant increases, staying near the levels observed in recent years.
This stability in electricity prices has allowed many residents renewing their energy contracts to secure rates similar to those they have previously paid, thus maintaining overall energy costs at manageable levels. This situation is markedly different from the 2022 energy crisis when energy bills surged dramatically following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
However, the effect of the situation is more pronounced at the fuel pumps. Between March and July, Dutch households spent an average of about €765 at petrol stations, a noticeable increase from €708 during the same period last year. Despite the rise in fuel costs, the increase in spending is less stark, possibly indicating that some consumers are driving less or opting for cheaper fuel options to mitigate the impact of higher prices.
