A new direct gas pipeline connecting Norway and the Netherlands is on the horizon, with plans advancing following a successful feasibility study. The operator of the North Sea pipeline, Nogat, is now set to refine critical aspects of the project, particularly its transport capacity. This proposed pipeline aims to offer an alternative route for Norwegian gas, bolstering supply security in the event of disruptions to existing links.
Slated to commence operations in 2029, the pipeline is designed to handle over 4 billion cubic meters of gas annually, a volume that represents approximately 15% of the Netherlands’ total gas consumption. As Europe grapples with declining domestic energy production and strives to lessen its reliance on suppliers from geopolitically unstable regions, this infrastructure project is deemed significant by Nogat.
Falco van Wissen, the director of Nogat, highlighted that the existing gas systems can be easily integrated with the Norwegian offshore pipeline. He noted that Norwegian gas already constitutes about a third of Europe’s gas imports and is considered less environmentally harmful than LNG imports. This connection reflects Europe’s broader efforts to secure a stable and cleaner energy supply.
The initiative underscores the strategic importance of diversifying energy routes, particularly as the continent seeks to navigate the complexities of energy dependency. The decision regarding the remaining investments necessary for the project is anticipated to be made by the stakeholders by the middle of next year.
