Recognizing the difference between a simple stomach upset and a condition that necessitates medical intervention is crucial to avoid complications.

Typically, diarrhoea results from viral infections, food intolerances, overeating, or temporary digestive issues. Symptoms generally include loose stools, mild stomach discomfort, and fatigue. Most cases improve with adequate hydration and by replenishing lost electrolytes. Nonetheless, certain warning signs suggest a more serious gut infection may be present.

If diarrhoea persists beyond two to three days or is accompanied by a high fever, intense stomach cramps, blood or mucus in stools, or symptoms of dehydration such as dizziness, extreme thirst, and reduced urination, medical attention is advised. To diagnose the cause, doctors recommend considering recent dietary habits, travel history, and contact with others experiencing similar symptoms, which can indicate an infection from bacteria or other harmful organisms.

One such bacterial infection that leads to severe diarrhoea is Shigella. This bacterium spreads easily through contaminated food, water, surfaces, or direct person-to-person contact. Even minimal exposure to Shigella can result in illness. Symptoms generally appear a few days post-exposure and may include watery or bloody diarrhoea, fever, abdominal cramps, and frequent urges to use the toilet. While many individuals recover with supportive care, severe cases might require medical intervention.

Preventing diarrhoeal infections largely hinges on good hygiene practices. Regular handwashing with soap, consuming safe drinking water, and ensuring food is properly washed and thoroughly cooked can significantly reduce the risk of infection. Additionally, maintaining clean surroundings, avoiding unsafe water sources, and exercising caution following an illness can help curb the spread of gut infections.
