Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his political party, D66, have come under scrutiny for their extensive use of artificial intelligence to generate social media content, sparking debates over the authenticity and trustworthiness of political messaging. An examination of 1,812 social media posts from Jetten’s and D66’s accounts on platforms like X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn since 2021 revealed that at least 232 posts were produced using AI chatbots. This included 68 posts from Jetten’s personal accounts and 164 from the party’s accounts.
The reliance on AI-generated content reportedly surged following the collapse of the Schoof I Cabinet in June 2025, with about 30% of posts from Jetten and D66 identified as being AI-generated during this period. AI technology was also employed in part for Jetten’s book “Hoe het wél kan” and for several lines in three D66 campaign videos. The revelation has raised eyebrows particularly because some AI-assisted posts addressed sensitive topics such as the war in Ukraine, the MH17 disaster commemoration, and the government’s apology to the Moluccan community.
D66 has acknowledged the use of AI in their social media strategy but emphasized that all content undergoes review and refinement by their team. The party also stated that posts on Jetten’s personal accounts are based on his own input and receive his approval or edits before publishing. Despite these assurances, experts have expressed concerns over the potential impact on Jetten’s credibility. Claes de Vreese, a professor at the University of Amsterdam, cautioned that AI-generated language might blur the line between a politician’s genuine opinions and computer-created messages.
This controversy highlights broader issues regarding transparency and the role of AI in political communication, especially when public figures are expected to convey personal viewpoints through official social media channels. As AI technology becomes more integrated into political strategies, the challenge remains to ensure that such tools do not erode public trust or obscure the genuine voices of elected officials.
