Poland and Ukraine have denounced Russian military strikes near the Polish border, labeling them as a perilous escalation in the ongoing war and cautioning that this could pose a growing threat to European security. The incident involved a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train, which was reportedly hit approximately two kilometers from Polish territory, though no casualties were reported. According to Ukraine’s railway operator, several notable foreign figures, including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and ex-CIA Director David Petraeus, were present at a nearby border station during the attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Russia for allegedly targeting the locomotive with intent, warning that such actions could bring the conflict dangerously close to Europe. In response to the attack, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting, expressing concern that Russia might escalate its military operations in the weeks to come. Tusk emphasized that Poland could not dismiss the possibility that this escalation could impact its own territory.
Russia defended its actions, stating that it had aimed at railway infrastructure utilized for transporting military equipment from European nations. The strike was deemed a significant escalation by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who called for increased support from Ukraine’s allies. The Kremlin indicated that talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States might resume in October, although previous negotiations have yet to achieve a breakthrough.
President Zelenskyy has indicated a willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the G20 summit in Miami in December. However, Moscow has dismissed this suggestion, maintaining that it would only consider such a meeting if held in Russia. As tensions continue to rise, the possibility of a peaceful resolution remains elusive.
